James grew up primarily in Oregon. After 9/11, he joined the Army National Guard while working for Hampton Lumber in Portland. In 2009, he was deployed to Iraq. Upon returning, he decided to transition out of the physically demanding lumber industry and pursue Drafting and Design. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design from ITT Technical Institute (now closed). Most of his design work has focused on mechanical 3D modeling in Inventor, particularly air handlers for Nortek Inc. in Tualatin, Oregon. In 2021, James and his wife moved to Alaska to be closer to their grandchildren. He joined AMC Engineers in 2024 and is looking forward to building a meaningful, long-term career with the team.

  1. Why did you choose this career?

    I was working for a lumber company when I realized it wasn’t something I could do forever. So, using the GI Bill, I took the artistic talent I had as a kid and turned it into a career in drafting.

  2. If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be?

    If I could instantly master any skill, it would be flying a helicopter.

  3. Who or what inspires you?

    My Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.
